best proofreading course

I really enjoyed this course and learned a lot about proofreading and copyediting and starting my own business.

As you go through the course, you can tell Brie really knows her stuff. She will mention tidbits of information that will save you a lot of time and frustration.

This information alone is worth the cost of the course.

– Angela Yang

But wait . . . why can’t you just learn proofreading from a cheaper course?

Many people who are looking for a proofreader believe that a proofreader will completely edit their document or book for grammar. WRONG.

In reality, proofreading is the lowest tier of editing, designed only to catch any simple errors missed by other editors.

It’s the last step after all other editing has been completed.

Copyediting is the most-requested skill that actually works through all syntax and grammar problems, fact checking, consistency issues, and more.

A great copyeditor edits books, essays, blogs, and articles to make sure they’re grammatically correct to build consumer and reader trust.

And you get paid WAY better than proofreaders.

The Catch: Learning to Copyedit Takes Effort

Here are a few things you need to be a pro copyeditor:

– have an eye for detail
– a tendency to catch errors in writing
– know how to edit to an author’s voice
– know how much to charge for your skill

– understand formatting, style guides, and citations
– prove you’ve learned the necessary real-world skills

The Editing Academy Testimonials

proofread anywhere testimonial

Editing Made Easy has given me the confidence and skills to start working as a freelance copyeditor. The course is well-paced, and there were plenty of opportunities to hone my newly acquired skills as I worked through the practice essays.

The grammar section is the most comprehensive training I’ve come across. As a writer, I thought I had a pretty good understanding already, but I’ve learned so much more from this course.

You can tell a lot of thought and expertise has gone into designing the course. The flow is logical and each section is broken down into easily absorbed chunks.

I’ve taken a few other courses in editing but, upon completing them, have never felt very confident in my abilities. That’s all changed now that I’ve completed this course. With the help from the section on setting up your own business, I finally feel ready to go it alone

Thank you so much. This course is worth every penny—and then some.

– Debbie Jacobs

After taking an online proofreading course and some online grammar classes, I did not feel prepared to work with clients. I felt like I knew corrections/changes that needed to be made, but was not able to explain the rules or reasons why if I was asked. As I searched for another course,

Brie suggested trying her editing course. Though I was skeptical, she answered my many questions, and I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed.

The Editing Made Easy course breaks down the many parts and rules of copyediting and proofreading and presents them through videos that provide both auditory and visual learning backed up by concrete examples of the many rules of the Chicago Manual of Style guide.

By the time I got to the practice section, I felt prepared to both complete these exercises and take on a client piece. One of my favorite things is the ability to go back to the videos and be able to find the rule, example, and Chicago Manual of Style reference for any questions I have in an easy-to-find format.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re ready to become a proofreader and copyeditor, but still have a few questions, then check out the answers to these frequently asked questions to learn more.

What’s the difference between proofreading and copyediting?

Great question! The short answer is this: proofreading is the last pass of a review. The document or book should have been edited for plot, grammar, syntax, and consistency already. Proofreading will catch typos, misspelled words, punctuation issues, and formatting errors.

Copyediting is the critical step before proofreading where a full grammatical review is completed along with checking facts, consistency, and punctuation. It’s actually the most important editing step. If a writer only chooses one kind of edit for their document, it should be a copyedit. We’ll go into this in much more detail in the course.

How much money can I make as a proofreader or copyeditor?

Copyeditors definitely make more than proofreaders, but there is no single answer or guarantee about how much you can make as a proofreader or copyeditor. This course is designed to provide the skills necessary to be successful, and there are endless ways to earn money depending on your effort and the time you put in.

This career can be a part- or full-time venture for you, which also affects how much you could earn.. For example, current copyeditors can earn anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 per month—or more!

Do you teach American or British rules?

The grammar rules taught in the Editing Made Easy master course are industry-standard American English.

What if English is not my native language?

It is strongly recommended that you be fluent in oral and written English. This course is designed for native and fluent English speakers who understand common grammar and language nuances. It’s not a course about learning English grammar, but a course on how to apply editing rules to the written English language. A firm grasp of the English language and the differences between casual, professional, academic, and even dialects (to some degree) will be critical as a copyeditor.

Does proofreading and copyediting get boring?

Not for any editors we know! This is a career path for people who love to read, dive deep into the details of a project, and improve a work in progress. Though proofreading and copyediting involve the same detailed tasks, no two projects are the same. There is an endless supply of topics to edit from cryptocurrency to historical to fan fiction. Each project could be informative or entertaining to work on.

I’m a stay-at-home mom. Is proofreading and copyediting flexible?

Yes! You work with your clients to come up with a deadline that works for each of you. If you only have time in the morning or evening, then schedule your jobs with enough time to complete them in the hours you have available. If you choose to work for a company, there are part-time jobs available that will also work with your schedule.

What’s the best age to become a proofreader and copyeditor?

Just be an adult! This is a great career for almost anyone who is interested in earning part-time or full-time income from home. You might even want to hire on to a publishing house or company after you’ve gained some experience.

What qualifications or skills do I need to become a proofreader and copyeditor?

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need an English degree to be a successful editor, though it’s a great stepping stone. You should be comfortable using your computer: PC or Mac. In this digital age, your clients will communicate through email, and you’ll edit documents digitally. Most importantly, you need a can-do attitude and an eye for detail!

Are there legitimate proofreading jobs out there?

Definitely. There are tons of legitimate work-at-home proofreading and copyediting jobs. And there are more copyediting or editing jobs than even proofreading jobs. That’s why you’ll learn both skills in this proofreading and copyediting course. You’ll also learn how to avoid scammy jobs.

Isn’t it “copy editor” not “copyeditor”?

You’ve done your research! This is the fun part about words—things are always changing as our lexicons keep up with today’s world. The AP Stylebook recommends copy editor, many dictionaries state both copy editor and copyeditor, and the Chicago Manual of Style recommends copyeditor. Writing it as one word is becoming more common, and it matches how proofreader is written as well, so that’s how we’ve chosen to write it.

Does it really only take 30 days to complete the course?

Many students do push through the course materials within a month, if they have the time. Once you purchase the course, you have lifetime access to your account and any updates to the course.

Is there a guarantee or refund?

Since this is a self-paced course, we can only guarantee that you’ll have access to industry-standard editing rules and methods. It’s up to you if you choose to complete and certify in this course to earn money through work that you find. There are many opportunities available and avenues to chase, and you’ll get the best pro tips and tricks for landing your first job. At this time, students who complete at least 75 percent of the course can request a refund within 30 days.

Do you offer work for students after they successfully complete the course?

Not at this time. We understand that every student is different and will have different interests and niches they want to pursue. We do make sure you are given the exact tools and steps that many other successful proofreaders and copyeditors have used to launch their freelance editing businesses (including our founder!), so you can feel confident as you venture into this new career.

Do I learn on my own or does someone actually help to teach me?

This is one aspect we’re proud of here at the Editing Academy. We have created helpful video lectures that carefully walk students through each rule or concept, apply them to examples, then review the lesson before students move on to the homework. You aren’t paying for a course to teach yourself and feel like you’re floundering. We’re here to help you gain confidence and knowledge.

What if I have questions during the course?

Most of the course lectures have a section for students to leave comments or questions for other students or an admin. You can also review any existing comments to see if it answers your question, too. A member of The Editing Academy team responds to all questions within 24 to 48 hours on business days.

How can I prove I’m a qualified proofreader and copyeditor after I finish?

At the end of all the course, you’ll have an option to complete an evaluation test at no additional cost. This evaluation will be graded by a member of The Editing Academy team to ensure the student has learned and applied the lessons from the course. Students who pass the evaluation successfully will receive an official certificate of graduation from The Editing Academy as a proofreader and copyeditor.
